Joint and Extremity Pain: Chiropractic Isn't Just for Backs
Dr. Heidi Pickering, DCComprehensive Care Beyond the Spine
While chiropractors are most famous for treating issues related to the spine, comprehensive chiropractic care actually extends to all the joints in the human body—a practice known as extremity adjusting. This includes vital joints such as the shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles. Joint and extremity pain very often results from repetitive stress, sports-related injuries, or compensatory movements your body makes due to underlying spinal issues. We provide specialized extremity adjustments designed to restore proper alignment and optimal function to these peripheral joints, effectively relieving pain and vastly improving your overall range of motion.
How Extremity Adjustments Work
Just like the vertebrae in your spine, the bones in your extremities can lose their normal alignment and their healthy range of motion. For instance, a misaligned bone in the wrist can cause severe carpal tunnel-like symptoms, or a restricted, stiff ankle joint can alter your gait and lead to chronic knee and hip pain. To resolve this, we apply specific, controlled adjustments directly to the affected extremity joint to restore its proper biomechanical glide and roll. This precise movement reduces friction within the joint, relieves pressure on the surrounding nerves, and relaxes the associated muscles and tendons, ultimately allowing for smooth, fluid, and pain-free movement.
Who Can Benefit from Extremity Care?
Extremity adjusting is a perfect solution for patients suffering from a variety of common conditions, including frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, runner's knee, plantar fasciitis, or general, persistent stiffness in the arms and legs. It is particularly beneficial for active athletes and individuals who work in physically demanding jobs. However, care must be taken with certain acute conditions. Joints that are actively dislocated, severely fractured, or currently suffering from acute, highly inflammatory types of arthritis (such as an active gout flare-up) should not be adjusted until the acute medical condition has been properly stabilized by a physician.
What to Expect During Your Extremity Session
During your 15 to 30-minute session, we will thoroughly assess not only the painful joint itself but also the entire kinetic chain associated with it (for example, we will check your hip and ankle mechanics if you are presenting with knee pain). The adjustment itself is very quick and precise; a small, targeted thrust is applied to the joint, which often results in a satisfying "pop" and an immediate, noticeable increase in flexibility. We may also incorporate soft tissue techniques on the surrounding muscles to enhance the healing process. You can generally expect improved mobility right away. Depending on how long the joint has been restricted, it may take several sessions over a few weeks to fully retrain the supporting ligaments and muscles to hold the proper, healthy alignment.
